This week's Kitakyushu roundup features new openings, closures, and seasonal events across the city. In shops, Kokurakita Ward's wedding hall will reopen as 'The Central Park Kokura' in 2027, and two stores reopened after renovation at Amu Plaza Kokura West Building. In Yahatahigashi Ward, three new stores opened at The Outlets Kitakyushu, and Ropia will open there in December. Meanwhile, closures include Nishitetsu Store Reganet Cute Riverwalk in Tobata Ward, Konami Sports Club Tobata, and a 93-year-old tailor shop in Yahatahigashi Ward. For events, the food festival 'Gastro Kitakyushu' will be held at Kitakyushu Messe on September 12-13, alongside a flea market at Kokura Station, the Kumade Ginten Shopping Street's autumn Kumade Meguri, Bird Fest and Balloon Sanpo at Hibikinada Biotope, and the Kitakyushu Pop Culture Festival. Kitakyushu is entering the height of summer festival season, with lively events held across the city's wards, alongside several new shop openings and closures.
Events: At Kitakyushu Media Dome in Yahatahigashi Ward, a summer festival runs through August 30. At JR Kokura Station's JAM Plaza in Kokurakita Ward, a music event featured residents singing enthusiastically. In Kokuraminami Ward, "Matsuri Minami 2026" (featuring fireworks and a 1,000-person dance) takes place on August 29, followed by the "Mizubakkashi Festival" at Kanoka Park on August 30. Kokurakita Ward also hosts the free "Mizukake Matsuri" water festival on August 29-30. A photo exhibition on Kokura Gion Taiko drums is on display at Kokurakita Ward Office, and children took part in a Kokura Castle quiz event. Citywide, entries are being accepted for the Kitakyushu Monorail Photo Contest (August 26-October 8), and the "Kitakyushu Bread Festival 2026" is scheduled for October 24-25.
Shops: The restaurant inside "Mitsui Club" in Moji Ward announced its closure, and the roughly 70-year-old Chinese restaurant "Kokura Hanten" in Kokurakita Ward has also closed. Meanwhile, "Baycrew's Store" is set to open at Amu Plaza Kokura on September 10, and the indoor play facility "Kids Land US" has opened in Yahatanishi Ward.

This week in Kitakyushu brings a lineup of end-of-summer events and new shop openings. In Yahatanishi Ward's Kurosaki area, an open-top bus will run through the shopping arcade for the first time in Japan, with a parade featuring Ken Matsudaira. Kitakyushu Airport marked its 20th anniversary with a special event letting visitors walk on the runway, and will host the 'Fukuchi Town & JAL Tourism Fair 2026' on August 29-30. This week in Kitakyushu brings a lineup of summer festivals, fireworks, and new shop openings. On the shop front, the authentic sushi restaurant Uzu opened in the Mojiko Retro area, while the new Ichibankan facility at Tanga Market was unveiled, with its food floor set to partially open in November. A 24-hour gym, ECOFIT24 Kitakyushu Honjo, opened in Kokurakita-ku, and Apaman Shop Yahatahigashi opened in Yahatahigashi-ku. In Kokuraminami-ku, a new funeral hall opened on the former Domino's Pizza site, while the Cacao Cat chocolate shop in Kokurakita-ku is set to close. For events, the Kanmon Straits Fireworks Festival (18,000 fireworks) will be held in Moji-ku on August 16, alongside the Yahataminami Obon Festival Fireworks (1,000 fireworks) in Yahatanishi-ku. The Showa Summer Festival at Katsuyama Park in Kokurakita-ku will feature star guests. To mark the airport's 20th anniversary, the first-ever Kitakyushu Airport Runway Walk will take place. The Kitakyushu Showa Summer Festival runs August 14-23 citywide. In Kokurakita Ward, 'Sushi Seijiro' won the All Japan Kaiten-zushi MVP Championship for a second straight year. Wakamatsu Ward's Matiluta Summer Festival 2026 will feature fireworks, while Moji Ward hosts the Mojiko Oimatsu Free Market and Yahatanishi Ward holds the Koyanose Tanabata Festival with somen noodle sliding.
Shops: Fukuoka's first Hoshino Resorts property is opening in Mojiko, alongside the new 'AMAZINGSPOT' opening July 24. Kokurakita Ward welcomes Gong cha and Flying Tiger Copenhagen as first stores in the area, Yahatahigashi Ward gets an Apaman Shop branch, and a convenience store has opened inside Wakamatsu Ward Office.

This week in Kitakyushu City brings a wave of summer events and new store openings. Events: Moji-ku hosts the Bankoku Yoichi night market and the Sakaemachi Yoichi night market, while Tobata-ku holds a lantern float competition creating a striking light pyramid display. Citywide, the annual Wasshoi Hyakuman Natsu Matsuri festival is set, along with the launch of the KITAKYUSHU OPEN TOP BUS touring Kokura Castle and Moji Port Retro. Closures: An 82-year-old lighting shop in Yahata-nishi-ku is closing, and the Maxvalu Mihagino store in Kokura-kita-ku will close next month.
